Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) Roundtable: Celebrating Black History Month Through Advocacy and Action

Join the Providers’ Council’s first quarterly DEIB Roundtable of 2026!

This facilitated discussion will explore Black history in Social Work and will highlight important Black figures who helped shape the field of care work. Dr. Bailey will explore the urgent need for human service providers to engage in a bold reimagining of justice—one rooted not only in advocacy and resistance, but also in radical care, empathy, and relational leadership. By remaining rooted in resilience, we can honor the work, center the community and advance the future.

Gary Bailey, PhD, MSW Program Director, Simmons University School of Social Work

Dr. Gary Bailey is the MSW Program Director at Simmons School of Social Work . He is also a Professor of Practice in Simmons Schools of Social Work and Nursing and Health Sciences. He was the Assistant Dean for Community Engagement and Social Justice at the College of Social Sciences, Policy and Practice at Simmons University. Professor Bailey has devoted his career to sharing his deep knowledge, expertise, and leadership in the fields of Social Work, Public Health, Youth Education, and Affordable Housing.

He is a past president of the International Federation of Social Workers based in Bern, Switzerland—the first person of color to hold this post. He is a past president of NASW National-Washington D.C. and the Massachusetts Chapter of NASW. He was the Chairperson of the National Social Work Public Education Campaign. At Boston University School of Public Health Maternal and ChildHealth Center for Excellence, Professor Bailey serves as a mentor in the Diversity Scholars Leadership Program.
