Stability Planning: Finding Firm Ground When the Work Can’t Stop
Date and Time: November 4; 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Location: Online via Zoom
Intended Audience: Executive Leadership
Learning Track: Leadership & Organizational Development
Strategic planning depends on being able to predict, to some degree, what’s coming. That’s just not where we are right now — it’s hard to say with any confidence what next year will bring, let alone what things will look like in five. That’s a challenge across the nonprofit sector, but it’s a particularly tight spot for human services organizations, because the usual response — narrowing your scope, shifting resources toward the work you can sustain — assumes a level of choice about your programs that you don’t really have when the work is contracted and the rates are set somewhere else.
Stability planning is an alternative process for nonprofit leaders who need real direction right now but can’t credibly commit to a multi-year plan. This session will define what stability planning is, how it differs from traditional strategic planning, and how to lead the process in your own organization. We’ll spend real time on what’s inside your control and what isn’t, and what that means for what you actually do. The session will share three ways to run this, from a single facilitated day to a multi-month process, so you leave with the questions, the sequence, and the facilitation moves you’d need to run a version that fits your capacity.
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
– Define what stability means for their own organization, from financial, programmatic, and staffing vantage points, and identify what most threatens it right now
– Structure the internal decision-making process about what to protect, pause, or flag as unsustainable, including who’s in the conversation, what information informs it, and who holds the final call
– Choose and sequence an approach to leading a stability planning process in their own organization, sized to their capacity and timeline
