Public policy decisions have a significant impact on nonprofits and the communities we serve. When nonprofits have a seat at the table, we can help ensure that local needs and perspectives inform decision-making. Board members are uniquely positioned to champion and strengthen advocacy within their organizations. This training covers the basics of nonprofit advocacy – what it is, why it matters, legal rules for lobbying, and how boards can help increase their organization’s impact through advocacy.
Over two 1-hour sessions, attendees will learn how to:
• Explain why advocacy is essential in advancing nonprofit missions and how advocacy can support the work of your nonprofit.
• Distinguish between advocacy and lobbying, and describe basic rules for lobbying as a nonprofit.
• Identify one specific action you or your board can take to strengthen your organization’s advocacy efforts.
