Partnering with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) helps nonprofits streamline HR operations, reduce administrative burdens, and focus on their mission. A key aspect of this relationship is that employee wages are reported under the PEO’s Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), not the nonprofit’s own. This shift can reduce liability, simplify compliance, and grant access to the PEO’s specialized HR expertise.
PEOs manage critical HR functions like payroll processing, benefits administration, employee onboarding, compliance management, and navigating complex employment laws—freeing up internal resources. Nonprofits also benefit from the PEO’s group purchasing power, which can unlock access to better benefits at more affordable rates.
Through a co-employment model, the nonprofit retains control over daily operations and strategic direction, while the PEO assumes certain legal and administrative responsibilities, reducing the nonprofit’s exposure to employment-related risks. By offloading these HR tasks, nonprofits can stay compliant, improve efficiency, and focus on their core programs and long-term goals.
At the end of this session, participants will:
– Understand what a PEO is and the advantages of using a PEO
– Be able to demystify common myths around PEOs
– Understand that not all PEOs are the same and gain insight on what type of PEO would be most useful for their organization
