This workshop provides therapists with a framework for working with queer Autistic clients and explores the intersections of the LGBTQ and neurodivergent communities. Participants will explore the use of queer theory and minority stress theory to contextualize the experience of, and support, queer Autistic clients. This workshop should strengthen cultural competence in working with individuals from both communities and attendees will have a chance to learn and practice new skills through a combination of lecture and small group discussions of case examples.
This session offers 1.5 CEUs for Social Work.
Learning Objectives:
- Define queer theory and minority stress theory and give examples of how those theories can be used when providing care to queer Autistic clients.
- Utilize language and concepts that are affirming of both queer and neurodivergent identities.
- Name two ways to support queer Autistic clients in navigating systems that prioritize straight, cis, neurotypical individuals.
