The Caring Force is honored to announce Keith MacNeil as our TCF May 2025 Workforce Hero Spotlight honoree. MacNeil is Director of Clinical Services at Advocates.
1. Tell us about your background. How did you decide to pursue a career in human services?
My path into human services is deeply personal. I’ve been on the receiving end of support for substance-use disorder, and that experience changed everything for me. It showed me just how powerful compassion and consistent support can be— especially when you’re at your lowest.
The people who stood by me helped me see value and potential in myself when I couldn’t. That kind of impact stuck with me. I knew I wanted to give that same hope and guidance to others. For me, this isn’t just a job—it’s a way to give back, to walk alongside people on their journey, and to remind them that change is always possible.
2. What does a typical day look like for you at your organization?
No two days are ever the same—and that’s what I love about it. I might be meeting with someone I’m supporting, helping them navigate resources, advocating on their behalf, or simply being present to listen. Some days are heavy, others are hopeful, but every day is meaningful. The unpredictability can be challenging, but it keeps me sharp and connected to the real, human side of this work.
3. What is your favorite professional memory?
One that stands out was seeing a person I had worked with for over a year get their own apartment and reunite with their child. It wasn’t just a success story—it was the result of a lot of hard work, setbacks, and moments where he almost gave up. Being part of that journey, even in a small way, reminded me why I do what I do. It’s moments like that—where someone’s hope becomes reality—that stay with you forever.
4. This question is from our May Workforce Hero, Erika Musselman: What do you do to “fill your cup” and care for yourself so that you have the internal resources to care for and serve others professionally?
I’ve learned that self-care isn’t optional in this work—it’s essential. For me, running in the early morning with uplifting music helps me reset and clear my mind. On days off, I love riding my motorcycle through the mountains. There’s something grounding about being surrounded by nature and the open road. These routines give me the mental space to process, reflect, and come back to work with clarity and compassion.
5. Do you have a question for the next person we spotlight?
What keeps you inspired on the hardest days—and how do you hold on to that inspiration?
Thank you so much to Keith and all of our wonderful human service workers across the Commonwealth who bring joy, positivity and passion to work every day! We are so thankful for you and your efforts to make Massachusetts a better place.
