Gov. Maura Healey last month declared a state of emergency in order to address the state’s shelter system, which has been strained by a recent spike in the number of migrants relocating to Massachusetts. The governor called on the federal government to remove barriers and expedite federal work authorizations for migrants, as well as to help fund new shelters.

Yet despite the gravity of the situation — more than 6,000 families, including children and pregnant women, are currently in the state’s emergency shelters — Massachusetts has not yet received the federal aid needed to respond to this growing crisis.
