SOLD OUT! Creating Safer Spaces for LGBTQ Youth & Families

Beaverbrook STEP, Inc. 85 Main St, Watertown, MA 02472

This session has reached maximum capacity. Please contact Amanda McCarthy at amccarthy@providers.org if you would like to be added to the waitlist.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) young people and families face disproportionate rates of harassment and mistreatment in their schools and communities. Consequently LGBTQ youth are at much higher risk for mental health challenges, substance abuse, homelessness, truancy and other risky behaviors. By contrast, professionals who are working with youth and families, however accepting they may feel, are rarely prepared to manage the issues that arise in schools and social service settings. This interactive workshop will explore how personal beliefs and values, school or agency culture, and culturally responsive policies and practices can impact work with LGBTQ youth and families.

This training takes place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 14th at Beaverbrook STEP, Inc. in Watertown.

In this session you will:

  • Establish common knowledge base to understand the experiences of LGBTQ youth & families;
  • Explore how personal beliefs and attitudes may impact work with LGBTQ youth & families;
  • Assess the risks and strengths in the current educational & community climates for LGBTQ youth & families; and
  • Build skills in use of inclusive language, creation of welcoming environments and provision of culturally responsive resources.
