We cannot stand neutral while our community continues to suffer under the burden of discrimination and injustice. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “A riot is the language of the unheard”. For over 56 years since our creation as part of the civil rights movement, Community Teamwork has been a voice for those unheard, silenced, and marginalized.
As we continue to advocate in memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless other Black Men and Women who have been murdered at the hands of racism, we have to ask ourselves, what is justice? Arrests, trials and convictions are the most immediate means of justice that are needed. However, justice also means eradicating the systemic racism that has plagued our nation since its inception.
We must bring an end to the systemic cruelty and criminalization of the Black Community, the attacks on Asian Americans and immigrants, and the disparities in our education and health systems that are deeply embedded in our laws and policies.
Community Teamwork has ongoing efforts to create the systemic changes needed within our agency and community. But it is clear that we need to intensify our efforts and strengthen our focus towards holding all sectors accountable to create reform in order for all members of our community to truly have equal rights.
