This program will provide clinicians with background knowledge about firearms, safe firearms storage, firearms safety, and the laws of firearms ownership in Massachusetts to
improve their knowledge, vernacular, and confidence when discussing suicide prevention as it relates to firearms and safer firearms storage with military and veterans in the community. This training will also discuss the relationship veterans and law enforcement have with firearms. It will provide an overview of tools for suicide risk screening and will offer specific questioning and scenarios related to risk of death by suicide with firearms demonstrated and practiced through role play.
Although this program focuses specifically on law enforcement and veterans’ culture, it is not exclusively applicable to them and can be applied to many subgroups.
Practitioners of all levels and experiences are encouraged to attend! This training offers 4.5 CEs for Psychologists, Social Workers, Nursing and LMHCs.

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
– Identify basic Massachusetts laws related to firearms safety as they relate to lethal means counseling.
– Explain veterans’ and law enforcement relationships with firearms and at least one issue that might come up related to veterans/law enforcement and firearm ownership and/or safety.
– Discuss firearm function and safe handling with their clients with increased confidence.
– Interview patients for suicidality related to firearms.
– List at least three measures of safe storage to increase the time between thoughts of suicide and actions using firearms.
