On July 23, the Providers’ Council signs onto the National Council of Nonprofits’ (NCN) letter to the Trump administration to protect nonprofit nonpartisanship.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has asked a federal court in Texas to approve a legal settlement between it and the National Religious Broadcasters, along with two churches in Texas, that could undermine a federal law — known as the Johnson Amendment — that protects nonprofits from partisan politics. If approved, the settlement would declare the Johnson Amendment to be unconstitutional and bar enforcement of the law against the two churches involved in the case.
For historical background on the Johnson Amendment, check out NCN’s policy overview.
Interfaith Alliance, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, National Council of Nonprofits, Independent Sector, Public Citizen, American Humanist Assocation and Freedom from Religion Foundation are sponsoring the letter along with NCN to ask all nonprofit organizations — including faith-based organizations — to help protect nonprofit nonpartisanship.
