In 1987 Congress designated March as Women’s History Month. All month long Americans are urged to recognize and celebrate women, both in history and around us today, for their countless contributions to society.
With 80 percent of its workers being women, the human service sector has plenty to acknowledge and celebrate!
The percentage of female workers in the human service sector is nearly twice that of all other industries except for health care. As noted in the Providers’ Council’s recent report, The Face of the Human Services Sector, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said that in 2014 women made up:
- 96% of child care workers
- 89% of nursing, psychiatric and home health aides
- 84% of personal care aides
- 82% of social workers
- 78% of social and human service assistants
These statistics prove that women do it all! They provide quality care around the Commonwealth to our children, elders and everyone in-between. The vital support they provide ensures so many can lead happier, healthier and more independent lives.
