The Caring Force Blog Quarterly Policy Update- House Budget Addition

Advocacy from The Caring Force helped secure more than 50 co-sponsors for Rep. Jeffrey Roy’s budget amendment #1213, Loan Repayment Program for Human Services Workers, but we learned late Monday that it was not included in the House’s FY ’19 budget proposal.

Although the amendment didn’t make it this time, we still have plenty of which to be proud. Members of The Caring Force sent hundreds of letters to your representatives and got about one-third of the House to cosponsor Rep. Roy’s amendment – we can use that as momentum going forward!

And while the language and funding won’t be in the House’s budget, we still have a number of opportunities to make this loan repayment program a reality for human services workers. Our loan repayment legislation – House Bill 116 and Senate Bill 42 – has already received a favorable report from the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities, and it’s pending before the House Committee on Ways and Means. Plus, we will be engaging in other strategic actions in the coming weeks.

Again, thanks for your advocacy, and stay tuned to see how you can help make a loan repayment program for direct care workers a reality.
