News Massachusetts Attorney General issues new guidance regarding immigration concerns

The Massachusetts Attorney General has issued new guidance to health care providers regarding the treatment of immigrant patients amidst concerns about immigration enforcement and access to care. The guidance highlights protections that ensure law enforcement does not interfere with the provision of care and provides advice on dealing with law enforcement officials such as ICE.

Additionally, this guidance recommends that providers not inquire about or retain information regarding a client’s immigration status, unless required to do so, as this may discourage individuals from seeking necessary care.

This guidance is not legal advice or a formal legal opinion of the Attorney General. The AG’s office suggests that healthcare providers or organizations should consult with legal counsel regarding specific questions and concerns.
