Gov. Maura Healey signed a bill into law today investing more funds into the state’s emergency assistance family shelter system and putting limits on how long homeless families can stay in the system.
The bill allocates an additional $251 million in FY ’24 funds to the state’s shelter system and limits shelter stays for families to nine months, with certain families eligible for up to two 90-day extensions, starting June 1. It also creates a hardship waiver process to provide some families additional time in shelters.
Those eligible for extensions include people with disabilities and their caretakers, veterans, people who are pregnant or who recently gave birth, people at risk of harm from domestic violence, people with jobs and people who are enrolled in job-training programs, among other groups.
