News Fair pay, loan repayment bills reported favorably by Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilites

The Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities earlier this week reported the Providers’ Council’s Fair Pay for Comparable Work and Student Loan Repayment legislation out of committee favorably, a significant step in securing additional funding for human services programs and workers. The bills have been referred to the Senate committee on Ways and Means.

Our Fair Pay for Comparable Work bill would eliminate the pay disparity between community-based human services workers and state employees who do similar work. Our loan repayment legislation would create a program to help human services workers pay back their student loans – this program would be in addition to the loan repayment program we already secured in the American Rescue Plan Act spending plan which is funded at $16.5 million.

By advancing these bills, we are closer to eliminating the pay disparity and creating loan repayment opportunities, thereby strengthening the community-based human services workforce that fills more than 180,000 jobs and serves one-in-ten residents of the Commonwealth.
