On December 10, the Council hosted a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Roundtable focused on making the holidays a time of respect and celebration for all. Led by Sonia D’Alarcao and Felicia Heywood of BAMSI, attendees discussed best practices for celebrating the holidays.
While the holiday season is traditionally thought of as stretching from the beginning of December to New Years, it is important to remember that this comes from a very Christian-centric worldview. In fact, many cultures and religions have various days and months throughout the year that are considered “holiday seasons” for them and their communities. Therefore, D’Alarcao and Heywood focused their presentation on the importance of education and appreciation, especially surrounding days of celebration.
The discussion outlined several strategies for creating a more wholistic view of the holidays through a variety of celebrations throughout the year and hosting discussions on several various DEIB topics.
