News Council and members send letter to conference committee on family shelter stay limits bill

The Providers’ Council sent a letter today to the conference committee negotiating the final version of a family shelter bill that will put limits on how long homeless families can stay in the system, urging leadership to adopt four key items to support the critical safety net.

Specifically, the Council asked the conference committee to:

  • Include language from the Senate version of the bill that would allow for one or more 90-day extensions to residents who meet certain criteria;
  • Include language from the House version that would allocate an additional $245 million to the Emergency Assistance Family Shelter system through the end of FY ’24;
  • Include language from the House version that would use no less than $10 million to establish an approved training program to provide skills and resources to those in the system; and
  • Include language from the Senate version that would allow the Executive Office for Administration and Finance to submit biweekly reports.

More than two dozen Council members who provide Emergency Assistance Family Shelter programs in Massachusetts undersigned the letter – Click here to read it in full.
