News Webinar on navigating the sector during the new administration helps members prepare for 2025

In December, a panel of human services leaders and a national advocate participated in a Council webinar titled “Navigating the Future of Human Services: Challenges and Opportunities with a New Administration.” The discussion offered Council members insights into critical issues to monitor as a new administration begins its work in Washington, D.C., this January. Panelists shared diverse perspectives and actionable strategies to help organizations prepare for potential policy changes and challenges.

Participating were Leah Bradley, executive director of Central Massachusetts Housing Alliance; Jessica Mendieta, policy associate at National Council of Nonprofits; Anne Ohlrich, executive director of Immigrants Assistance Center; Sean Rose, president and CEO of Thrive Support & Advocacy; and Jeff Thielman, president and CEO of International Institute of New England. Providers’ Council President/CEO Bill Yelenak moderated the hour-long panel and facilitated questions from participants.

A significant focus of the conversation was the new administration’s proposed immigration policies. Thielman highlighted potential challenges, including deportations and their ripple effects on resettlement agencies and the broader workforce—issues that resurfaced during the first Trump administration.

To address some risks associated with immigration reform, several organizations have proactively engaged with local law enforcement, fostering open communication to navigate these complex issues collaboratively.

The discussion also turned to organizational readiness. Bradley shared practical steps her team has implemented, such as maximizing funding opportunities and ensuring financial records are audit-ready to meet anticipated federal scrutiny. Rose emphasized the importance of aligning organizational priorities with emerging challenges.

Throughout the conversation, panelists underscored a shared priority: workforce wellness and organizational resilience. By empowering staff, fostering cross-sector collaboration, and maintaining robust advocacy efforts, the human services sector can better adapt to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
