Salary Reserve

Update: Please participate in the Providers' Council's legislative campaign to protect the Salary Reserve. Click here to send an e-mail to your legislator today.

Direct care workers are, without a doubt, the fibers of the safety net which government swears to keep whole and a stable workforce is the best way for the Commonwealth to keep its promise to our most vulnerable residents – a promise to provide quality services.

That is why the Providers' Council has organized a coalition of trade and advocacy organizations to request a Salary Reserve for the FY 2011 Budget.  We seek a reserve a $28 million for workers earning under $40,000.  These funds are critical to maintain a strong workforce of caregivers like Samuel Karanga from Work, Inc. in Dorchester...

The House Ways and Means Committee will be releasing its proposed budget for FY 2011 and it may or may not have a salary reserve. Regardless, we are at work now to get sponsors for an amendment that will be filed by Representative Ruth Balser to have the request go to the final budget that will go to the House for debate the week of April 26th.

Please take a second to support this important fund to support the underpaid caregivers providing essential community supports:

  • Call and email your representative's office to ask them to contact Rep. Balser and sign on as a sponsor to the amendment.
  • Follow-up to confirm that they are willing to sponsor and let us know.
  • Remind your representative that having fairly paid staff is critical to the delivery of quality services, these community-based jobs help local economies and the salary increases are spent locally, which creates jobs in the private sector.
