About the Certificate in Supervision Trainings

Participants register for all six trainings in the series, and receive a certificate when they successfully complete all six sessions.

This series will train supervisors in the following key areas:

Communication and Leadership

Explore leadership, communication and effective listening through interactive activities. Learn about your strengths through self-assessment and other exercises, and bring to light opportunities for improvement. A mixture of small group discussions, case scenarios, practice sessions and full room exercises keep the training pace lively and engaging. Attend this session to learn:

  • Characteristics of successful leadership
  • Factors that effect communication
  • The impact of various styles of communication
  • Active listening skills

Situational Leadership for the Supervisor

Our preferred style of leadership may not be the most effective way to deal with every situation. How do we adjust our style to different situations that we encounter in our jobs? Learn about a model that addresses supervision in terms of employee skills level and commitment. Using case studies, participants will practice ways to adjust style to meet the needs of individuals when their natural preference is not the best fit.

Conflict Management

Gain a deeper understanding of how to effectively supervise in a diverse and changing workplace where conflict demands immediate and proactive action. Learn about five modes of managing conflict and assess your preferred style. Explore the issues related to addressing conflict, develop essential skills to respond during disagreement and problem-solve current issues.

Team Building

Success as an agency and fulfillment of mission is directly linked to every supervisor's ability to effectively utilize the knowledge, skills and abilities of all employees. This session will focus on effective team building techniques and unit cohesion in a constantly changing work environment.  Gain an understanding of your role as a team leader, learn how to work more effectively with individual differences and develop an action plan.

Performance Management

On-going, constructive dialogue between employee and manager is an essential element of successful performance management.This session will enhance your ability to:

  • prepare and monitor well-written performance objectives
  • offer appropriate performance coaching and feedback to your staff
  • and conduct productive performance evaluations.

Group Planning and Decision Making

Explore barriers and levers for effective planning and decision-making in the workplace, through human service-based simulations. Learn effective approaches to planning, how to match types of decision-making with different situations, and successful meeting management techniques.
