Spotlight on Stephanie Cormier, Recent Graduate of the Clark Certificate in Community Human Services Management program

What first drew you to the Certificate in Human Services Management program at Clark?
At my organization, Key Program, Inc, I am a recruiter and trainer and I have worked regularly with upper level management and human resources staff.  I knew that I wanted to go back to school to get my master's degree but I was a little bit hesitant.  After attending the Clark Open House, receiving encouragement from my colleagues and supervisor, and learning about the cost, it seemed that this program would be a good fit.
What do you feel was the greatest benefit to doing this program?
The greatest benefit of the program was being with peers who were in similar situations and who were very supportive.  My class was very diverse in ethnicity, geography and position.  This allowed me to hone my skills working with a wide variety of human service leaders and professionals.
How has it helped you in your current position?
The program helped me to develop an overall perspective about nonprofit management and insight into all the workings of running a nonprofit business including financial, legal and other issues that nonprofit executives face.  Because it was a unique moment in Massachusetts with one of the most difficult state budget crises in recent years, my classmates and I were afforded the opportunity to discuss how budget cuts were affecting our organizations and how to sustain the social services field.
What advice would you give to those considering the program who have not yet decided if it is right for them?
I would highly recommend the program.  In order to do it well, you need to be driven and personally motivated.  You need to be self-disciplined and able to get 5 days of work done in a 4 day workweek (unless your organization is able to modify your workload) and also be able to complete your coursework.  This is a great opportunity for someone who may be scared or unsure about whether they want to enroll in a degree program.  For some of my classmates, it was the push they needed to know that they did want to move forward to get that Master’s degree.
