About the Scholarship

The Providers’ Council and Simmons School of Social Work partnered to provide an exciting opportunity for a qualified employee of Providers’ Council member to receive the Simmons School of Social Work and Providers’ Council Dean's Leadership Award.

The successful scholarship candidate will have the opportunity to enroll in the Urban Leadership Program at the Simmons School of Social Work, a graduate degree program leading to an MSW and a Certificate in Urban Leadership in Clinical Social Work (ULP). The scholarship covers full tuition for the three year program. The program allows for working people to take classes toward the degree in the evening, as well as during the day.

The Providers’ Council is committed to promoting workforce development and preparing human service employees for leadership roles. The School of Social Work (SSW) at Simmons College is an exceptional program with a national reputation for excellence in training social workers for direct clinical practice.

The Urban Leadership Program seeks students with demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to urban practice. Qualified candidates will have worked in human services for at least two years and must be committed to continuing their employment with their current employer after receiving their MSW for at least two years.

The School of Social Work’s Urban Leadership Program (ULP) was developed in response to the growing need for clinical social workers to assume leadership roles in urban agencies.

This generous education opportunity, valued at more than $60,000, reflects a strong commitment to preparing students for leadership roles within the field of human services.

The Provider Council's selection of the scholarship recipient will be inspired by the memory of the late Dr. Barbara Brown, a leading advocate for education in our sector.

The scholarship will be awarded to the selected student each year as long as the candidate remains in teh Urban Leadership program and the MSW program, maintains at least a B average and adheres to the ethical and professional standards expected of a professional social worker and a Simmons ULP student. In addition, the student’s employer must remain a member of the Providers’ Council in good standing for the duration of the student’s graduate program.
